You will not be charged for medications that you receive while staying in hospital. The doctor may write you a prescription before you leave hospital. \r\nPreparation for your surgery<\/h2>\r\n
Prepare for your surgery by following the instructions provided to avoid your surgery being cancelled.\u00a0 This includes when to fast, medications to stop and anything you have been told to bring on the day of surgery.\u00a0We also have a range of online resources<\/a> to provide you with additional information.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n
Your surgery<\/h2>\r\n
\r\nAdmission<\/h3>\r\n
On arrival, visit the Admissions<\/a> Desk located on ground floor of the Main Building. After you have completed your paperwork and clarified your personal details are correct, you will be directed to the Day Procedure Unit located on level 2 of the Main Building.<\/p>\r\n
Day Procedure Unit<\/h3>\r\n
When you arrive at the Day Procedure Unit<\/a> you will prepare for surgery and change into a surgical gown. The nurse will check your personal details, put an identification bracelet on you, take your blood pressure and temperature and go through a list of questions. We understand this is an anxious time for you, however your support person may not enter the preparation area.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

After surgery<\/h2>\r\n
\r\nGoing home on the day of surgery<\/h3>\r\n
If you are going home on the same day as your surgery, you will be taken back to the recovery area where you are monitored, provided with a light snack and your support person is contacted. You\u2019ll receive your discharge<\/a> and follow up information to ensure you have an easy transition back home. In the following days, a nurse will contact you to ask about your recovery and answer any questions you may have.<\/p>\r\n
Staying longer (ward)<\/h3>\r\n
If you are staying longer you will be transferred to a ward.\u00a0 Staff will help you with your post-operative needs and care for you while you recover. When you\u2019re well enough to leave, you\u2019ll receive your discharge and follow up information<\/a> to ensure you have an easy transition back home.\u00a0 Discharge is at 10am and you must have a support person collect you to take you home. Information provided may include:<\/p>\r\n
- \r\n\t
- any follow-up outpatient appointments<\/li>\r\n\t
- medicines and prescriptions<\/li>\r\n\t
- arrangements for any community support services<\/li>\r\n\t
- any equipment or aids you need at home.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n
Concerns after surgery<\/h3>\r\n
If you have any concerns about your health after you leave hospital, contact your general practitioner or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). If you suddenly become unwell, call the hospital ward and speak with the staff, or go to the hospital Emergency Department.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Leaving hospital (discharge)<\/h2>\r\n
Before you leave hospital, we will work with you to identify services that will assist in your recovery and\u00a0plan your discharge. Your discharge plan may include extra support services at a different facility, home or follow-up appointments. Before leaving, please make sure you understand:<\/p>\r\n
- \r\n\t
- why you were in hospital<\/li>\r\n\t
- what you need to do next<\/li>\r\n\t
- any extra support or care you need to help you recover<\/li>\r\n\t
- what you need to do if you feel unwell, or if you\u2019re not recovering.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n
If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to your care team. Before you leave the hospital, please check that you have:<\/p>\r\n
- \r\n\t
- arranged transport home<\/li>\r\n\t
- collected all your personal belongings, x-rays and medications<\/li>\r\n\t
- your discharge medications and any scripts required<\/li>\r\n\t
- details for your follow-up appointments (if necessary)<\/li>\r\n\t
- your travel forms signed (if necessary)<\/li>\r\n\t
- a medical certificate for your employer or sickness benefits if required<\/li>\r\n\t
- a medical discharge summary for your GP<\/li>\r\n\t
- any referral forms you need (if services have been arranged for you).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

Transport and transfers home<\/h2>\r\n
You will need to arrange private transport home. Ambulance transport will be organised if your care team determines it is necessary.\u00a0There are free car parks on the hospital grounds<\/a> and a 2-minute pick-up bay at the front of the hospital. Hospital walking aids and other equipment are not allowed outside the hospital grounds. Your care team or your family will need to make arrangements to hire appliances or aids from a private supplier if you need them at home. [\/fusion_text][fusion_menu_anchor name=\"self-discharge\" class=\"\" \/][fusion_text]<\/p>\r\n
Self-discharge<\/h2>\r\n
If you want to leave the hospital against medical advice, you should talk about this with your doctor as they will want to understand and work through your concerns. If you still decide to leave, you will be asked to sign a Discharge Against Medical Advice form. If you do leave against medical advice, we encourage you to see your GP as soon as possible, or go to an Emergency Department if you are unwell or need further treatment. Medication when you leave<\/h2>\r\n
Make sure you know which medications<\/a> to take once you are discharged. The medications you bring to the hospital with you may not be suitable to take after your hospital stay. Your nurse can contact the ward pharmacist if you have any questions. \u00a0During your stay in hospital you will receive an invoice for medications that may be ordered for you, for when you leave hospital. You will need to pay for these medications<\/a> upon discharge. [\/fusion_text][fusion_menu_anchor name=\"concerns\" class=\"\" \/][fusion_text]<\/p>\r\n
Concerns after you leave hospital<\/h2>\r\n
Contact your GP or 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) if you have any problems after you leave the hospital. If you need urgent care call Triple Zero (000) or visit your local Emergency Department.[\/fusion_text][fusion_menu_anchor name=\"medical-records\" class=\"\" \/][fusion_text]<\/p>\r\n
