{"id":9003,"date":"2023-08-10T14:17:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T04:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/caboolture\/?post_type=services&#038;p=9003"},"modified":"2025-07-14T16:21:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T06:21:58","slug":"older-persons-mental-health-service","status":"publish","type":"services","link":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/caboolture\/healthcare-services\/older-persons-mental-health-service","title":{"rendered":"Older Persons Mental Health Service"},"content":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","categories":[1],"tags":[296,1240,1241],"class_list":["post-9003","services","type-services","status-publish","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-mental-illness","tag-mental-illness-older-person","tag-over-65-mental-illness"],"acf":{"page_subtitle":"","page_type":"structured","include_in_alphabetical_listing":true,"page_sections":["general_details","accessing_this_service","what_to_bring"],"general_details":[{"what_we_do":"<p>The Older Persons\u2019 Mental Health Service provides specialist multidisciplinary mental health assessment and treatment for consumers over 65 years of age who experience severe and complex mental health problems, especially those with complications of ageing.<\/p>\n","conditions_treated":"","our_services":"<p>We are committed to recovery-focused care through the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>specialist mental health treatment and interventions<\/li>\n<li>assistance with transition from the mental health inpatient unit back into the community<\/li>\n<li>consultation and liaison with GPs, aged-care facilities and other health professionals<\/li>\n<li>support and education for consumers, carers and aged-care facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conditions treated<\/h2>\n<p>Common conditions treated by the Older Persons Mental Health Team include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bipolar disorder\/mania<\/li>\n<li>depression<\/li>\n<li>schizophrenia\/other psychotic conditions<\/li>\n<li>severe psychiatric complications of dementia (on a case by case basis)<\/li>\n<li>other severe or complex mental health presentations not customarily managed by GPs or aged care providers alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Therapies<\/h2>\n<p>Therapeutic interventions are provided on the basis of individual need and evidence-based guidelines depending on diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Interventions fall into six main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>healthy behaviours practiced by the individual, such as exercise, diet and routine<\/li>\n<li>psychological approaches, such as building skills in helpful thinking, problem solving and coping with strong emotions<\/li>\n<li>physical treatments, such as medication and (less commonly) electroconvulsive therapy<\/li>\n<li>changes in personal environment<\/li>\n<li>communication and care tips for friends, family and professional care staff<\/li>\n<li>link people with organisations, such as support for participation in daily activities, dementia care and carer support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","include_link_to_healthcare_professionals_section":false,"gd_other_content":[{"general_content":[{"heading":"Your care team","content":"<p>Your treating team is made up of a range of mental health professionals including doctors, mental health nurses, occupational therapists, social workers and psychologists.<\/p>\n<p>Your GP and\/or other community supports will be regularly updated to ensure that everyone involved in your ongoing care understands the plan for your mental health treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The team operates on the premise that older people can and do recover from mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>When you recover, we will refer you back to your GP or provide you with other treatment and support options for your ongoing care.<\/p>\n"}]}]}],"accessing_this_service":[{"variation":"freetext","free_text":"<p>To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to contact 1300 MH CALL (1300 642 255).<\/p>\n<h3>Referrals<\/h3>\n<p>To ensure your service needs are met in a timely manner we would request the following information at time of referral:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self or carer referrals: Our triage clinicians will guide you through any additional information that may be required. It is essential to know about active Guardianship or Power of Attorney arrangements.<\/li>\n<li>For health practitioners: Key assessment findings, treatment interventions provided or proposed, and current General Practitioner\/other service providers.<\/li>\n<li>For General Practitioners: Key assessment findings including physical examination, current medications and recent investigation\/pathology results.<\/li>\n<li>For residential aged care facilities: General Practitioner review prior to referral (see GP requirements above),<\/li>\n<li>Emergency services (Ambulance or Emergency Departments): These services can facilitate access for individuals in an acute crisis.<\/li>\n<li>What if the person won\u2019t agree to be seen? The\u00a0<em>Mental Health Act 2016<\/em>\u00a0provides for the involuntary assessment and treatment, and the protection, of persons with mental illness.
