--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/600;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roberts became a Redcliffe Hospital volunteer in 2023 after moving to the area.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Metro North Chief Executive Jackie Hanson joined leaders and staff from Redcliffe Hospital to thank volunteers for their work this year.<\/h4>\n<p>In 2024, Redcliffe Hospital\u2019s 90-strong volunteer cohort contributed more than 15,000 hours in service to support patients and staff at the hospital in roles such as chaplaincy, companions, auxiliary and justice of the peace volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 of the group recently came together to socialise and enjoy lunch with all the festive trimmings.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Robert, a new retiree and resident of the Peninsula who started volunteering at the hospital in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very active and social during my working life, with roles including being a teacher and a TAFE trainer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I wanted to continue that social interaction in retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert serves as a Volunteer Companion, where he visits wards with books and magazines for patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruth be told, these are mostly conversation starters, the main part of the role is connecting with patients, who are often having a difficult time in hospital,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>As a self-confessed people person, the role is a natural fit for Robert and one he\u2019s relishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love meeting new people and connecting with them, in this role I get to meet people from all walks of life \u2013 it\u2019s perfect for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor patients who are in hospital for a while, I like that I become a familiar face and someone they can trust and build a relationship with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While enjoying Christmas lunch with 50 of his colleagues, Robert reflects on his first year as a Redcliffe Hospital volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteering at the hospital has been a great way to stay connected and make a difference in people\u2019s lives, I\u2019ve become part of a whole new community in retirement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to Robert and all the volunteers across Metro North for the important role you play in our communities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Redcliffe Hospital recently held its annual Christmas lunch to thank its army of volunteers for another year of outstanding service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":77,"featured_media":9232,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9231","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9231","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/77"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9231"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9231\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9236,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9231\/revisions\/9236"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/9232"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9231"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9231"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9231"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
