As a healthcare worker, it is essential for you to understand your rights and obligations to ensure we are able to support our community.<\/h4>\n<p>There are key things <strong>all RBWH staff members\u00a0<\/strong>must know prior to the legislation coming into effect. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prior to 1 January, all staff are strongly encouraged to complete the training:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ilearncatalogue.health.qld.gov.au\/course\/2011\/voluntary-assisted-dying-education-module-for-healthcare-workers\">Voluntary Assisted Dying Education module for healthcare workers<\/a>. The training only takes 45 minutes and will equip you with the knowledge to meet your obligations to your patients and community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You must be aware of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.qld.gov.au\/clinical-practice\/guidelines-procedures\/voluntary-assisted-dying\/information-for-healthcare-workers\/scope-of-practice\">obligations<\/a>\u00a0as a healthcare worker\u00a0under the\u00a0Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If a patient raises the VAD topic with you, you need to know what to do (even if you are a conscientious objector):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Only a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner can\u00a0<u>initiate a conversation<\/u>\u00a0about voluntary assisted dying.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If any other healthcare worker initiates a conversation about voluntary assisted dying, they could be found in breach of the Act.<\/p>\n<p>A healthcare worker can provide\u00a0<u>general information<\/u>\u00a0at the person\u2019s request, which must be a clear and unambiguous question. Learn more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.qld.gov.au\/clinical-practice\/guidelines-procedures\/voluntary-assisted-dying\/information-for-healthcare-workers\/healthcare-workers-response\">responding to a person asking about voluntary assisted dying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qheps.health.qld.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0039\/2868285\/factsheet-vad-healthworker.pdf\">Metro North Conversation Guide and Information for Healthcare Workers (QHEPS)<\/a>\u00a0is an excellent resource to support staff (including non-clinical staff)\u00a0on what they can say and do. It can be found on internally on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qheps.health.qld.gov.au\/metronorth\/voluntary-assisted-dying\">Metro North QHEPS VAD page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If unsure, speak with your line manager, otherwise the Metro North\u00a0VAD team are available via email at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:MetroNorth_VAD@health.qld.gov.au\">MetroNorth_VAD@health.qld.gov.au<\/a>. A\u00a0phone number for staff will be available from 1 January 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are an eligible medical practitioner and are interested in becoming an authorised VAD practitioner, please consider applying.
