Today (Thursday 16 March 2023) marks the anniversary of the National Close the Gap Day<\/b>, launched by the Coalition of Australian Government (COAG) to achieve life expectancy parity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by 2031 (within a generation).<\/p>\n

The National Close the Gap Agreement<\/a> aims to achieve and improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across health, employment, early childhood, child mortality and life expectancy.<\/p>\n

In July 2020, the Australian Government committed to 16 targets (please see the\u00a0media<\/a> release on the announcement)<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Close the Gap in life expectancy<\/b>\u00a0within a generation, by 2031.<\/li>\n
  2. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0babies with a healthy birthweight<\/b>\u00a0to 91%.<\/li>\n
  3. By 2025, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children enrolled in Year Before Fulltime Schooling (YBFS)\u00a0early childhood education<\/b>\u00a0to 95%.<\/li>\n
  4. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0children assessed as developmentally on track<\/b>\u00a0in all five domains of the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) to 55%.<\/li>\n
  5. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (age 20-24)\u00a0attaining year 12 or equivalent<\/b>\u00a0qualification to 96%.<\/li>\n
  6. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25-34 years who have\u00a0completed a tertiary qualification<\/b>\u00a0(Certificate III and above) to 70 per cent.<\/li>\n
  7. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth (15\u201324 years) who are\u00a0in employment, education or training<\/b>\u00a0to 67%.<\/li>\n
  8. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25\u201364 who are\u00a0employed<\/b>\u00a0to 62%.<\/li>\n
  9. By 2031, increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people\u00a0living in appropriately sized (not overcrowded) housing<\/b>\u00a0to 88%.<\/li>\n
  10. By 2031, reduce the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0adults held in incarceration<\/b>\u00a0by at least 15%.<\/li>\n
  11. By 2031, reduce the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0young people (10-17 years) in detention<\/b>\u00a0by at least 15%.<\/li>\n
  12. By 2031, reduce the rate of over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0children in out-of-home care<\/b>\u00a0by 45%.<\/li>\n
  13. A significant and sustained\u00a0reduction in violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children<\/b>\u00a0towards zero.<\/li>\n
  14. Significant and sustained\u00a0reduction in suicide<\/b>\u00a0of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people towards zero.<\/li>\n
  15. a) By 2030, a 15% increase in Australia’s\u00a0landmass subject to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s legal rights or interests.<\/b>
    b) By 2030, a 15% increase in\u00a0areas covered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s legal rights or interests in the sea.<\/b><\/li>\n
  16. By 2031, there is a sustained increase in number and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander\u00a0languages being spoken.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It is important to acknowledge the significant efforts between both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to help close the gap, and more importantly, working together to address the inequalities and inequities that disproportionately affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.<\/p>\n
