This week we&#8217;re looking at Standard 3 (preventing and controlling infections) and Standard 4 (medication safety).<\/h4>\n<h3>Standard 3: Preventing and controlling infections<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Intention of the standard<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To reduce the risk to patients, consumers and members of the workforce of acquiring preventable infections<\/li>\n<li>To effectively manage infections, if they occur<\/li>\n<li>To prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance<\/li>\n<li>To promote appropriate prescribing and use of antimicrobials as part of antimicrobial stewardship<\/li>\n<li>To promote appropriate and sustainable use of infection prevention and control resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TPCH Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring our patients are supported to understand why precautions\/isolation may be needed for their care<\/li>\n<li>Consistent communication of infection risks including MRO status and precautions required<\/li>\n<li>Improving environmental cleaning in line with TPCH procedures<\/li>\n<li>Undertaking maintenance on any furnishing or fittings not meeting the standard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be <a href=\"https:\/\/comms.health.qld.gov.au\/ch\/92002\/r43m6\/8018\/YqlmMGmVg4Xmz5artOzfiLbB9uc30aPCN6Lf_OML.html\">5 moments of hand hygiene<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Always store linen covered<\/li>\n<li>Complete your mandatory Infection Control Awareness training if it is due<\/li>\n<li>Put in a work order for any surfaces or equipment in a state of disrepair<\/li>\n<li>Watch this use.<\/li>\n<li>To ensure that consumers are informed about medicines, and understand their own medicine needs and risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TPCH Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving documentation of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring safe and secure storage of medicines at all times<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/comms.health.qld.gov.au\/ch\/92002\/r43m6\/8020\/YqlmMGmVg4Xmz5artOzf5Yo2VFKWlCCqBaEjJ3.S.html\">decision support tools<\/a> in the end-of-bed charts and replace if out of date or damaged<\/li>\n<li>Ensure medication storage areas are always kept locked \u2013 in particular medication trolleys and beside lockers<\/li>\n<li>Never clip medication strips or packs to the end-of-bed chart<\/li>\n<li>Ensure weekly S8\/DS4 medication balance checks are recorded on each page of the register as per the <a
