RBWH staff were sad to hear of the recent passing of\u00a0former Director of Intensive Care Dr Valerie Muir.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Dr Muir\u00a0was a visionary leader and trailblazer who wanted to build the RBWH ICU unit into a world class service with academic recognition. The current unit owes much of its design and success to Valerie Muir.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>She\u00a0had\u00a0a traditional approach to her profession and\u00a0would spend all night at the patient's\u00a0bedside if she\u00a0thought she could make a difference.\u00a0Dr Muir\u00a0practiced intensive care at a time when\u00a0the specialty was finding its feet and developing the core principles that have served our\u00a0patients so well in the modern day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Dr Muir's insistence that\u00a0RBWH\u00a0continue\u00a0to strive for better and innovate as new<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>therapies became available has led to\u00a0improvements in care that patients enjoy today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>There is a generation of\u00a0intensivists and\u00a0critical\u00a0care\u00a0nurses who had the privilege of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>working with and being mentored by Val Muir.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Valerie Muir was never one to seek accolades or recognition for her work. Yet the height<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of our accomplishments reached today is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.\u00a0Dr Muir<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was a giant of\u00a0the\u00a0profession.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rest in peace, Dr Valerie Muir.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>
