This year the challenge was in the hands of participants, allowing them to choose their own activity and goal. Dr Burge chose to climb Argentina\u2019s Mt Aconcagua in 2017, the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking on my first Gutsy Challenge in 2017 was life changing and one of the best things I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d says Dr Burge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very humbled and very thankful to my patients and their families that have supported me. It is because of them that my achievements are recognised by this award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will keep pushing forward and fundraising into the future as much as I can, and I\u2019m looking forward to the next Gutsy Challenge when COVID-19 finally settles down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 28,900 Australians are diagnosed with GI cancers each year, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/oesophageal-cancer\/\">oesophageal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/stomach-cancer\/\">stomach<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/liver-cancer\/\">liver<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/gallbladder-and-biliary-cancer\/\">gallbladder and biliary tract<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/pancreatic-cancer\/\">pancreatic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/colorectal-cancer\/\">colorectal<\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/small-bowel-cancer\/\">small bowel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gicancer.org.au\/cancer\/anal-cancer\/\">anal cancer<\/a>. With an overall survival rate of just over 50% \u2013 and as low as 9% for pancreatic cancer \u2013 GI cancers kill more Australians everyday than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For his monumental fundraising and research efforts, Dr Burge was awarded the Fundraiser of the Year Award by the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations and thank you Dr Burge!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RBWH medical oncologist Dr Matthew Burge is known for his charitable nature having raised huge amounts of funds for gastro-intestinal cancer research in the past.
