What drew you to your role at RBWH?<\/h4>\n

Simon the sign guy.<\/p><\/div>\n

Over the years (almost 19 years)\u202fI\u2019ve worked here on site with the Building Engineering and Maintenance Services (BEMS) department. I started as a labourer before applying for an apprenticeship as a carpenter. I was fortunate enough to gain lots experience with the previous team running the Sign Room back then. I developed an interest in the sign writing industry, so upon finishing my apprenticeship I applied for a fulltime roll as a carpenter here at the RBWH to look after the signage related works! Since then I\u2019ve established a larger band of knowledge and capabilities.<\/p>\n

What has it been like working in such a vital role during a global pandemic?<\/h4>\n

For my COVID-19 response efforts, I contributed the best way I know how by applying my role and getting things done as quickly as possible for our staff, patients and visitors. To think that one of my signs may have stopped an infectious person spreading the virus made me feel like I was contributing to slowing the spread. Really, I was just doing what was asked of me and I was more than happy to be able to assist.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite part of your role?<\/h4>\n

My favourite part of my job is the impact signage can have on people. Good signage literally makes people stop and consciously think or react, for example the 1.5m social distancing floor decals.\u00a0 When I return to my normal role in signage, I always enjoy the final reveal for a completed sign and how fresh and modern looking they are. I guess I\u2019ve always enjoyed creating things with my hands too and having the carpentry background helps me think outside the box when needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>
