{"id":8483,"date":"2020-12-11T13:52:19","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T03:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/?p=524"},"modified":"2020-12-11T13:52:19","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T03:52:19","slug":"rbwh-foundation-funds-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/extranet\/newsletters\/news-at-the-royal\/rbwh-foundation-funds-research","title":{"rendered":"RBWH Foundation funds research for COVID-19 survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-329 size-fusion-200 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/10\/rbwh-foundation-f-200x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/133;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The research into the long-term medical issues facing survivors of COVID-19 is one of the first projects to be funded by the Royal Brisbane and Women\u2019s Hospital Foundation Coronavirus Action Fund.<\/p>\n<p>A total of nine COVID-19 grants have been awarded with some analysing the unprecedented changes in the way\u00a0\u200bRBWH delivers healthcare as a result of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to ensure that the Foundation\u2019s COVID-19 grants covered a wide range of COVID-19 research areas,\u201d RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearching the long-term effects of COVID-19 is incredibly important and some of the other research projects include the impact of life-support equipment on COVID-19 drugs, the impact of telehealth on patient care and an analysis of the length of time clinicians can wear PPE without taking a break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RBWH Principal Research Fellow and Specialist Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapist, Dr Jennifer Paratz, will analyse the progress of 200 RBWH COVID-19 patients over a six-month period to investigate ongoing medical issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, COVID-19 attention has focused on containing transmission, managing the severe and critically ill patients, and preventing deaths,\u201d Dr Paratz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReports from China, Europe and the UK document signi\ufb01cant e\ufb00ects on pulmonary, cardiac, functional, cognitive and psychological systems. These effects are worse in those severely a\ufb00ected by COVID-19 but can still be present in milder cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study will also assess potential need for referral and rehabilitation programs, post-recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane retired law lecturer Anne Wallace was one of the first people in Australia diagnosed with COVID-19. She tested positive and was hospitalised while on holiday in Tasmania in March before travel restrictions and quarantines were introduced.
