{"id":8497,"date":"2021-01-18T14:50:47","date_gmt":"2021-01-18T04:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/?p=638"},"modified":"2021-01-18T14:50:47","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T04:50:47","slug":"naidoc-week-event-celebrates-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/extranet\/newsletters\/tpch-newsletter\/naidoc-week-event-celebrates-culture","title":{"rendered":"NAIDOC Week event celebrates culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><div id=\"attachment_649\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-649\" class=\"size-full wp-image-649 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/01\/naidoc-week-physio-winners.jpg\" alt=\"NAIDOC Week physio winners\" width=\"300\" height=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Physiotherapy Department won first prize in the NAIDOC Week display competition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>TPCH staff came together late last year to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture during the hospital\u2019s annual NAIDOC Week event.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NAIDOC week occurred during November following the decision by the National NAIDOC Committee to postpone the week from the original July date due to the impacts and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic across the community.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the celebrations, wards and departments were invited to enter a NAIDOC display competition by decorating their local work area based on the theme of this year\u2019s NAIDOC week \u2013 <em>Always was, always will be<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The competition received a positive response from staff with several areas and wards entering to demonstrate their commitment to improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.<\/p>\n<p>The Thoracic Ward also held a colouring activity and special bush tucker morning tea for patients as part of its Eat Walk Engage program.<\/p>\n<p>Director or Nursing and Chair of TPCH\u2019s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee Cherie Franks said it was great to see so many areas using their creative efforts to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTPCH is committed to providing a culturally appropriate, respectful and sensitive environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, as well as all patients we care for,\u201d Cherie said.<\/p>\n<p>The displays were judged by TPCH Executive Director Michele Gardner, Director of Nursing Cherie Franks and local elder Uncle Clifford Dunn.<\/p>\n<p>Competition winners were:<br \/>\n1<sup>st<\/sup> prize: Physiotherapy Department<br \/>\n2<sup>nd<\/sup> prize: Ward 1G<br \/>\n3<sup>rd<\/sup> prize: Thoracic Ward<br \/>\nHighly commended:\u00a0 Ward 1A<\/p>\n<p>The winner received a painting donated by artist and TPCH Indigenous Liaison Officer Michelle Pieper.
