The Expo has been organised by the Metro North Mental Health Resource Team since it\u2019s inception and was previously known at the North Brisbane Mental Health Expo. Metro South partnered with Metro North five\u00a0years ago, and the Expo is now a key Mental Health Week event for Brisbane and surrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Taylor, RBWH Complex Care Co-ordinator and Jack Stanley, TPCH Complex Care Co-ordinator and Claire Carberry, PAH Service Integration Co-ordinator co-chaired the event this year leading a steering committee made up of local service provider representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Together they withstood threats of lockdowns and storms to host another successful Expo. The judges thought his\u00a0entry showed that he is &#8216;a clear leader in culture change \u2013 building and fostering interdisciplinary clinical and lived experience\u00a0research capacity and a workplace research and evaluation culture&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The award was based on his research working to establish an evidence base to inform practice and policy in community-based residential mental health services for people experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>TPCH had the pleasure of hosting his virtual award ceremony and were joined by colleagues from Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services, including his supervisor Dr Frances Dark.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:4px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;border-color:#e0dede;border-top-width:2px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><h2>Inclusion in Action \u2013 Multicultural Qld Month<\/h2>\n<p>As part of Multicultural Qld Month our MNMH Multicultural Mental Health Coordinators (MMHCs) have been building community partnerships to increase access and supports available for our CALD consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Our MMHCs actioned a referral from a Mental Health Clinician at Nundah Community Mental Health Service to find some cultural connections in the local community for a CALD consumer in treatment with their team who was born overseas in a non-English speaking county.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer resides in the Bracken Ridge area, so our MMHC approached the Bracken Ridge Library to discuss local support options. From there, a wonderful new initiative commenced!<\/p>\n<p>The library coordinators made the decision to launch an English Conversation Group for all members of the general public. Libraries offer a range of books, magazines, DVDs and CDs in several languages. The library catalogue (eLibCat) is also available in Spanish and Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t find the language you want, ask one of the library staff for help &#8211; they may be able to order it in for you. The libraries also have resources to help people learn English, including interactive CD-ROMs, books, DVDs with subtitles in a variety of languages, and language kits.<\/p>\n<p>All members of the public are welcome to attend any of the many respective Library English Conversation Groups regardless of where their home address is.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:4px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"--awb-height:20px;--awb-amount:20px;border-color:#e0dede;border-top-width:2px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p>Upcoming Workshops \u2013 Cross Cultural Communication<\/p>\n<p><strong>Optimising Cross-Cultural Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Presented by Andr\u00e9s Otero-Forero (Clinical Educator, Qld Transcultural Mental Health Centre) \u2013 an interactive reflective workshop focusing on the interplay between culture and language in mental health care. She did a brilliant job and should be acknowledged for her kindness and caring in a very difficult space allowing the consumer to feel heard, supported and part of the decision-making process in their journey to recovery. I would like to acknowledge the excellent work she is doing in this space, and I feel she should be recognised for all that she does.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My son NAME came in by ambulance today and he often just needs to talk to someone from mental health. He went to meet named peer worker and another lovely person from your new &#8220;Calm \/ Safe Place&#8221; and I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU!!!! Having a space that he can feel SAFE and able to talk to someone is exactly what he needs. He&#8217;s 28 now and being in the A&amp;E is not the right place for anyone with mental health issues like him. He has BPD, Autism and an Intellectual impairment. So, he only needs a place to sit quietly, talk to someone, and when he starts to calm down, of course his brain kicks in and he can THINK again.
