{"id":8845,"date":"2021-12-16T15:41:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T05:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/?p=3862"},"modified":"2021-12-16T15:41:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T05:41:42","slug":"virtual-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/extranet\/newsletters\/news-at-the-royal\/virtual-stroke","title":{"rendered":"RBWH Stroke Unit selected to host Queensland\u2019s first virtual stroke service"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><div id=\"attachment_3867\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3867\" class=\"wp-image-3867 size-fusion-400 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/staff-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/rbwh-stroke-unit-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"RBWH Stroke Unit selected to host Queensland\u2019s first virtual stroke service\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RBWH is excited to commence the Queensland Virtual Stroke Service<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>The Royal Brisbane and Women\u2019s Hospital Stroke Unit have been selected by Clinical Excellence QLD to host the proposed Queensland Virtual Stroke Service (QVSS).<\/h4>\n<p>QVSS was developed by the QLD State-wide Stroke Clinical Network to improve the equity of access to stroke care for patients who may develop ischaemic strokes, irrespective of their postcodes.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland is currently the only state in Australia that does not offer a virtual stroke service to support regional and remote services to deliver acute stroke care, so the commencement of the service is much anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>RBWH Clinical Director of the Neurosciences Division Dr Helen Brown said the team feels incredibly honoured to have been chosen to lead this service that will provide remote specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with a suspected stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStroke is currently a leading cause of death and disability in Queensland with one Australian suffering a stroke every 19 minutes,\u201d Dr Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year, more than 4000 Queenslanders suffer an ischaemic stroke and this number is projected to double by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people living outside of metropolitan areas, studies show that they are 17 per cent more likely to suffer a stroke and have poorer outcomes than their city counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith QVSS, we will be able to bridge this current inequity of access and produce better outcomes for these patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once final funding is secured, QVSS will link up to 20 regional hospitals to the virtual 24\/7 specialist stroke support, allowing patients to receive lifesaving care no matter where they live in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQVSS will result in more regional Queenslanders surviving stroke, recovering faster and with fewer adverse outcomes,\u201d Dr Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, it will reduce the burden of stroke on communities, the health system, and the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQVSS is a huge step forward for acute stroke care in Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Brisbane and Women\u2019s Hospital Stroke Unit have been selected by Clinical Excellence QLD to host the proposed Queensland Virtual Stroke Service (QVSS). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":51,"featured_media":3867,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[176],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8845","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-at-the-royal"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 -
