I lived here on campus for that time \u2013 we didn\u2019t go to university for nursing or midwifery back then!\u201d Bernie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout our training we weren\u2019t allowed to walk in front of a matron or sister and we\u2019d never call them by their first name like we do today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernie says that for her, one of the biggest changes has definitely been the uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey used to be so starchy and rough, you\u2019d have red marks at your neck from the collar in no time. We certainly don\u2019t wear the old caps anymore either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although midwifery has changed a lot, Bernie also reflects on the many parts that have stayed the same over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always loved getting to know the patients and caring for them as they learn to look after bub,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s mostly an extraordinarily happy job. It does have its sad days too, but overall it\u2019s a really lovely profession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also like teaching the young midwives, doctors and students as they come in. Sharing that experience is so important for the future generations of healthcare workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernie is a much-loved member of RBWH\u2019s midwifery team.
