--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2022 RBWH Foundation Project Grant recipients<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Use of a snake-venom based product to control bleeding and modify healing in burns patients, and development of robotic technology for minimally invasive surgery, are just two of the fascinating and innovative research grants which received funding at the 2022 RBWH Foundation Research Awards.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Some of the brightest medical minds from Royal Brisbane and Women\u2019s Hospital (RBWH) have been honoured and recognised, thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters who share the RBWH Foundation vision of advancing patient care and life-saving research.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cBeing an RBWH Foundation donor means being part of something that is incredibly special and powerful,\u201d said RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe have some of the country\u2019s most brilliant minds working at RBWH, but without our valued community\u2019s generosity and commitment, there would be no research.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two research grants were announced, totalling almost $1 million, across two categories: the 2022 Anglo American Burns, Skin and Wound Care Grants and the annual RBWH Foundation Project Grants.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jason Brown, Director of the RBWH Professor Stuart Pegg Adult Burns Centre, paid tribute to Anglo American for a significant philanthropic gift which funded ten ground-breaking research projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cIf you look at the World Health Organisation data, globally, burns is still one of the largest takers of \u2018quality-of-life\u2019 years so there are opportunities to improve those outcomes,\u201d said Dr Brown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThere has been a huge increase in survival and patient outcomes over the last three or four decades, but there is still a lot of work to be done globally.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The successful candidates were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anita Plaza: Physiotherapy\n<ul>\n<li><em>Enablers and barriers to participation in physical activity programs while hospitalised after burn injury.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Andrea McKittrick: Occupational Therapy\n<ul>\n<li><em>Development of a person-centred outcome measure for hand burn injuries.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr Carl Lisec: Stuart Pegg Adult Burns Unit\n<ul>\n<li><em>A pilot study assessing the feasibility of NexoBrid versus the current standard of care of isolated upper limb burns.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Amber Jones: Occupational Therapy\n<ul>\n<li><em>Evaluation and enhancement of the RBWH Multidisciplinary Burns Telehealth Service.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professor Anthony Holley: Intensive Care Services\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Development of an Australasian Burns Critical Care Registry.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr Merrilyn Banks: Nutrition &amp; Dietetics\n<ul>\n<li><em>Feasibility of using wearable sensors in patients with burn injury, to measure energy expenditure, and other observations, that can directly influence clinical care.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professor Jayesh Dhanani:\u00a0 Intensive Care Medicine\n<ul>\n<li><em>Innovation on burns pain management: Nebulised dexmedetomidine to reduce or eliminate the need for IV pain management: Pilot Phase III trial.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr Peter Gilles and Dr Andrew Dalley\n<ul>\n<li><em>Queensland Skin Culture Centre equipment upgrade enabling techniques using patient&#8217;s own cells to grow skin and improve recovery time.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr Amanda W. Kijas and Dr Abbas Shafiee\n<ul>\n<li><em>Pre-clinical evaluation of the efficacy of a venom-based haemostatic agent.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr Lynne Heyes\n<ul>\n<li><em>Psychological support: Burns survivor peer support program.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since 1985, RBWH Foundation has supported clinician-led research within the hospital.
