The new $340 million specialist public health facility under construction at the Herston Health Precinct will be named the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS).

Metro North Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Dr Robert Stable said the practical name is meaningful and reflective of the care which will be provided at the new facility.

“I’m pleased to see milestones being achieved both on and off site and that we are beginning to see STARS come to life,” Dr Stable said.

“We are adopting the STARS name in advance of it opening in 2021 to embed the facility name, now, in the crucial administration, patient and clinical systems needed for patient care.

“The process of developing a unique facility identifier and integrating this data is a significant exercise and we are already beginning to code STARS into our patient and clinical systems for a range of uses including ward name protocols, clinical unit names and outpatient clinic names and information for patients.”

Metro North Hospital and Health Service led a process to engage with approximately 100 clinical and non-clinical stakeholders and consumers to help inform the name of the facility.

STARS will provide a range of specialist surgical and complex rehabilitation services and will be delivered in a patient-centric model of care which will put individual’s needs at the centre of care.

The state-of-the-art facility to be operated by Metro North Hospital and Health Service is being delivered as part of the $1.1 billion Herston Quarter redevelopment in partnership with master developer Australian Unity.

STARS will comprise 184 beds, seven operating theatres, three endoscopy procedure rooms and consultation spaces for a range of specialties.

Construction of STARS commenced in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2020.
