If you need to express extra breastmilk for your baby, <a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/10052.pdf\">hand expressing<\/a> is a helpful skill to know. <a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/rbwh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/10052.pdf\">Hand expressing<\/a> is quick, you don\u2019t need special equipment, and it can help your breasts to make more milk.<\/p>\n<h2>As a reminder\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Tips to latch baby at the breast:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respond to baby\u2019s early feeding cues<\/li>\n<li>Place the baby skin-to-skin and allow them to self-latch<\/li>\n<li>In the early days a semi-reclined position allows gravity to hold baby in position, while you work out where to place your hands<\/li>\n<li>Allow the baby time to \u201cmouth\u201d and search for the breast<\/li>\n<li>Shape the breast if needed but make sure your fingers are well away from the nipple<\/li>\n<li>Adjust the baby\u2019s body so they face you fully, their chest and tummy have contact with your body, and the cheeks, chin and lips have contact with the breast<\/li>\n<li>Adjust baby\u2019s position and not the position of the breast<\/li>\n<li>The nipple will be at the level of the baby\u2019s nose just prior to latching<\/li>\n<li>Hold baby in close to you &#8211;
