Day coming up on Thursday 12 September, it\u2019s a good time to go over just how to ask someone if they are OK, and how to respond if they say \u201cnot really\u201d.<\/h4>\n<p>RBWH Culture and Wellbeing Coordinator Anna Jonsson says people in your life won\u2019t always tell you if something is not OK, so it\u2019s important to ask R U OK? any day and make it part of your everyday relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy opening up the conversation, it can help someone to find appropriate support and stop small problems from becoming bigger problems. Sometimes people just need someone to lend a listening ear,\u201d Anna says.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s her step-by-step guide on how to go about checking on someone, and how to help them if they need it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Ask R U OK?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick your moment, the time and place is important for everyone to be comfortable.<\/li>\n<li>If now doesn\u2019t suit, organise a time that does.<\/li>\n<li>If they don\u2019t want to talk, that\u2019s OK, let them know you\u2019re there for them if or when they need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Listen<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Be ready to listen, really listen.<\/li>\n<li>Give them time.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t rush them, interrupt or jump in and try to solve their problems right away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Encourage Action<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Help them to consider the next step that might lighten the load \u2013 talking to family, a trusted friend, their GP or another appropriate health professional.<\/li>\n<li>Suggest they try something that has worked for them or helped in the past if they\u2019ve faced a similar challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Find out if something has worked for them in the past to help them relax or bring them joy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Check in<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Check in again soon. You can plan this with them.<\/li>\n<li>Ask them if they\u2019ve found ways to better manage their situation.<\/li>\n<li>Be understanding.
