The current unit owes much of its design and success to Valerie Muir.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She\u00a0had\u00a0a traditional approach to her profession and\u00a0would spend all night at the patient's\u00a0bedside if she\u00a0thought she could make a difference.\u00a0Dr Muir\u00a0practiced intensive care at a time when\u00a0the specialty was finding its feet and developing the core principles that have served our\u00a0patients so well in the modern day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr Muir's insistence that\u00a0RBWH\u00a0continue\u00a0to strive for better and innovate as new<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">therapies became available has led to\u00a0improvements in care that patients enjoy today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is a generation of\u00a0intensivists and\u00a0critical\u00a0care\u00a0nurses who had the privilege of<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">working with and being mentored by Val Muir.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Valerie Muir was never one to seek accolades or recognition for her work.
