This helps protect your airway and opens the muscle at the top of the oesophagus (food pipe) to allow food and drink to pass more easily.

For this exercise, you will need either a rolled towel or a resistance ball. Consult your therapist to determine what is best for your therapy.

This exercise can be done in two ways: a repeated movement or a sustained hold. This helps protect your airway and opens the muscle at the top of the oesophagus, allowing food and drink to pass more easily.

For this exercise, you will need a theraband or a rolled towel. There are different levels of theraband resistance, so please consult your therapist about the recommended level for you. You will likely need the support of another person to complete this exercise.

Start by sitting upright with your back supported. Have your therapy partner place the theraband beneath your jaw, making sure it sits flush with your chin and does not fold or roll. Your therapy partner will then gently pull up on the band, applying resistance to your jaw.

Open your mouth wide against the band.

This exercise can be done in two ways:

Repeated movement: Hold your mouth open for 2 to 3 seconds, then slowly close your jaw and return to the resting position.

Sustained hold: Hold your jaw open against the band for the time recommended by your treating speech pathologist. This time varies for each patient.

It is important that your therapy partner applies consistent pressure throughout the task.

If you do not have access to a therapy partner or support person, this exercise can be done independently using a rolled towel. As with the band, place the towel beneath your chin for resistance and open your mouth wide against it.

Complete the recommended number of repetitions and sets, or the sustained hold, as prescribed by your treating speech pathologist.

Lingual Strengthening Exercise

Lingual Strengthening

Duration: 02:28

Show transcript

This task is lingual, or tongue strengthening. If you have reduced arm strength or coordination, you may need another person to assist.

There are several different tongue positions, and each position strengthens the tongue in slightly different ways.

Tongue protrusion against resistance:
Hold the tongue depressor upright approximately three centimetres from your lips. Poke out your tongue and push against the depressor for 3 to 5 seconds. Repeat as prescribed by your treating speech pathologist.

Tongue elevation against resistance:
Poke out your tongue and push the tip of your tongue upwards while downward pressure is applied using the tongue depressor. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds. Repeat as prescribed by your treating speech pathologist.

Tongue lateralisation against resistance:
Poke your tongue into your cheek and press outwards, keeping your tongue inside your mouth. Apply pressure with your fingers to the outside of your cheek. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds. Pressure is then applied with the tongue depressor.
