If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment. To assist with providing a timely procedure, you may be contacted by the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS), located at the RBWH Herston Campus. The Prince Charles Hospital has an Endoscopy Procedure Room at STARS where doctors from The Prince Charles Hospital also operate; therefore, your procedure may be booked at this facility.<\/p>\n<p>If your condition changes or you are concerned about your health before the date of your appointment, please contact your GP.<\/p>\n<p>Please advise your healthcare professional if you require <a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/tpch\/patients-and-visitors\/language-services\">interpreter services<\/a> during your clinic appointment or procedure.<\/p>\n<h3>Declining your appointment<\/h3>\n<p>Patients who decline the offer of an appointment date on two occasions will be deemed to have declined treatment. While we aim to keep appointments running on time, some unavoidable delays can change your appointment time. If you believe you have been waiting for too long, please notify the receptionist or nursing staff.<\/p>\n"}]},{"other_content":[{"heading":"Before your procedure","content":"<p>The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandquality.gov.au\/standards\/clinical-care-standards\/colonoscopy-clinical-care-standard\/colonoscopy-what-you-need-know\">Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standard<\/a> which sets out the important information and care you can expect to receive before during and after your colonoscopy.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to proceeding to colonoscopy, you may be required to attend Colonoscopy Consent Clinic or a National Bowel Cancer Screening Clinic with one of our experienced nurses who will complete a health assessment, and provide information and support regarding the bowel preparation and your procedure.\u00a0 This health assessment may take place over the telephone or in a face-to-face clinic. You may also receive a call from one of our pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p>Each appointment will take approximately 30 minutes.\u00a0 To assist with a smooth appointment, we ask that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the information sent to you regarding the clinic appointment and have it handy at the time of the appointment.\n<ul>\n<li>Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/pocketmedic.org\/colonoscopy\/\">videos<\/a> that will provide information that will assist with the bowel preparation and consent process.<\/li>\n<li>Access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandquality.gov.au\/standards\/clinical-care-standards\/colonoscopy-clinical-care-standard\/colonoscopy-resources-aboriginal-and-torres-strait-islander-peoples\">additional resources<\/a> for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have a list of your current medications.<\/li>\n<li>Know your height and weight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"}]},{"other_content":[{"heading":"How to prepare","content":"<h3>Nominate a contact person<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are having a sedative or an anaesthetic, you will need to provide the name and contact phone number of a responsible adult who can collect you after your appointment. If this is not arranged, your procedure will be cancelled. You can expect to be in the unit for about 3-5 hours.<\/li>\n<li>You will also need to ensure arrangements have been made for a responsible adult to remain with you overnight. If you plan to have an anaesthetic and have not arranged a supportive adult, your procedure will be cancelled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Follow pre-procedure and bowel prep instructions<\/h3>\n<h4>Pre-procedure instructions<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are having a colonoscopy, please ensure you follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/tpch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/Diet-and-Bowel-Preparation-Instructions.pdf\">pre-procedure bowel preparation instructions<\/a>.<br \/>\n(These instructions may vary slightly from the instructions provided to you by your health professional.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Bowel prep order and instructions<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You will be provided with individualised instructions for your bowel preparation, including times and quantities and this is specific to your appointment time. IMPORTANT &#8211; please <em>closely<\/em> follow the instructions provided to you by your health professional &#8211; not the instructions provided in the bowel preparation kit.<\/li>\n<li>Your bowel prep order can be collected free of charge from The Prince Charles Hospital pharmacy on the Ground Floor of the Main Building. This also includes chewing gum and lollies.<\/li>\n<li>Do not drink alcohol, avoid smoking and stop recreational drugs 24 hours before the procedure.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the patient history form and the hospital registration form.<\/li>\n<li>Please advise the Endoscopy Service if there is any possibility of pregnancy.<\/li>\n<li>If you are planning international travel soon after your procedure appointment, please contact the Endoscopy unit to discuss prior to your procedure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Medications<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Please seek advice from your doctor if you have diabetes, take warfarin or any other blood thinning medication. Do not stop taking this medication unless advised to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Please stop taking fish or krill oil supplements 7 days before any procedure.<\/li>\n<li>Please stop taking iron tablets and multivitamins 7 days before a colonoscopy procedure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Request forms or documents<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>You can request a medical certificate and\/or a carer\u2019s certificate for the day of your procedure. If you require a certificate for more days, please consult your GP.<\/li>\n<li>If you are seeking travel reimbursement through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qld.gov.au\/health\/services\/travel\/subsidies\/\">patient travel subsidy scheme<\/a>, you will need to bring this document with you.<\/li>\n<li>Please let us know if you need preparation instructions in other languages. Simplified Chinese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Farsi and Italian are currently available.<\/li>\n<li>Our Endoscopy Service has a <a href=\"https:\/\/pocketmedic.org\/colonoscopy\/\">suite of educational videos<\/a> related to endoscopy procedures. There are 6 videos and you only need to watch those applicable to you and your scheduled procedure. If you are scheduled for a pre-colonoscopy assessment appointment, an endoscopy or colonoscopy, you will be sent a link to these videos again in an SMS about your appointments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Parking<\/h3>\n<p>A 10-minute pick-up and drop-off parking bay is available at the Endoscopy unit for patients having procedure\/s which require anaesthetic. For patient drop-off, there is an undercover set-down and pick-up area located adjacent to the Endoscopy unit. You will be informed of the follow up required. It may include any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>outpatient clinic<\/li>\n<li>GP follow up<\/li>\n<li>ongoing surveillance of your condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please make sure to return your Colonoscopy <a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/tpch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/30-day-letter.pdf\">30 day follow up program letter<\/a>\u00a0at least 30 days after your admitted to the The Prince Charles Hospital you can elect to be treated as a private or public patient.\r\n<h2>Being treated as a public patient<\/h2>\r\nPublic patients, who are eligible for Medicare are not required to pay for their stay in hospital.\u00a0 There may be other costs incurred by public patients including;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Discharge medications.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>If you are admitted for more than 35 days and are not an acute patient, you will need to pay a daily contribution.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Being treated as a private patient<\/h2>\r\nPrivate patients can be treated by a doctor of their choice, provided that doctor has a right to private practice at the hospital.\r\n\r\nWorkers compensation, veterans\u2019 affairs and Defence Force patients will have their hospital expenses covered by these third party providers.\r\n\r\nWhen a patient elects to be treated as a private patient, they are provided information about any potential costs at or as soon as possible after admission.\r\n<h2>Health insurance<\/h2>\r\nPatients admitted to The Prince Charles Hospital are given the choice to elect to be treated as a private patient, and use their private hospital insurance to pay for the admission.\r\n\r\nHospital Patient Options Liaison Officers assist patients in determining the level of cover provided in their health insurance, including costs of care cover such as hospital accommodation, medical and diagnostic services and the services provided by your doctor and other medical specialists, such as anaesthetists.\r\n\r\nWhen electing to use private health insurance, you may not be required to pay an excess or co-payment if this applies to your health insurance policy, however if you are transferred to a private hospital on the same day of admission any excess or co-payment discounts may not apply.\r\n\r\nIf you are admitted privately from your specialist\u2019s rooms, excess and co-payments are applicable for this type of planned private admission. Hospital staff will contact you prior to admission to provide an estimate of costs.\r\n<h3>Benefits of using your private insurance<\/h3>\r\nIn many cases you are able to choose your doctor (excluding obstetrics) to treat you as long as your doctor of choice has the right to practice at the hospital and agrees to treat you.\u00a0 Otherwise you will be provided with a specialist at the hospital who will treat you.\u00a0 You can request a single room if your health fund policy covers this however please be aware that while private patients are treated in Queensland Health hospitals, a single room is not guaranteed. There are some free and metered parking in surrounding streets, accessed via Webster Road.\r\n<h3>Courtesy shuttle bus<\/h3>\r\nThe Prince Charles Hospital has introduced a free shuttle service to help patients and visitors get to where they need to go, particularly those requiring access to Building 6, Gastroenterology \/ Endoscopy and Surgical Outpatients.
