Problems with swallowing and communication may result from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>respiratory problems (e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)<\/li>\n<li>brain injuries (e.g. stroke)<\/li>\n<li>cardiac surgery (e.g. following insertions of stents and valves)<\/li>\n<li>orthopaedic surgery (e.g. following a broken hip)<\/li>\n<li>needing a breathing tube (tracheostomy) during an intensive care stay<\/li>\n<li>degenerative diseases such as motor neurone disease or Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/li>\n<li>children with developmental delay (e.g. Down syndrome, neuro-developmental disorder and autism spectrum disorder)<\/li>\n<li>babies with structural changes (e.g. laryngomalacia &#8211; weakening of the muscles around the throat).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","conditions_treated":"","our_services":"<p>We offer a variety of specialised services for adults and children including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>inpatient management of communication and swallowing difficulties.<\/li>\n<li>management of swallowing and communication for patients with a tracheostomy (breathing tube).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/metronorth.health.qld.gov.au\/tpch\/healthcare-services\/rehabilitation-day-therapy-unit\">Rehabilitation Day Therapy Unit<\/a>, Motor Neurone Disease Clinic and LSVT LOUD\u00ae (an intensive treatment for people with speech disorders related to Parkinson&#8217;s disease).<\/li>\n<li>instrumental assessments including:\n<ul>\n<li>Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies Clinic &#8211; a procedure to assess your swallowing under x-ray.<\/li>\n<li>Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow &#8211; a procedure where a small camera is used to assess both swallowing and the voice box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>education programs for patients and their families.<\/li>\n<li>assessment and treatment of children admitted to hospital with communication, feeding and swallowing difficulties<\/li>\n<li>endoscopic evaluation of voice \u2013 a procedure where a small camera is used to assess the voice box prior to receiving voice therapy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","include_link_to_healthcare_professionals_section":false,"gd_other_content":false}],"accessing_this_service":[{"variation":"freetext","free_text":"<p>No external referrals are accepted for this service.
