The timing of enrolment is at the discretion of the trainee, but early enrolment is encouraged to help ensure that appropriate training is pursued.<\/p>\n<p>Table 1 below illustrates the elements which must be undertaken in order to complete dual fellowship in optimum time. It is not complete until fellowship of the \u2018parent\u2019 College has been awarded and the Letter of Completion has issued by the Joint Training Committee.<\/p>\n<h4>Stage 3<\/h4>\n<p>Prior to commencement of this stage, registration as a trainee with the other College is required.<\/p>\n<h4>Minimum Requirements<\/h4>\n<p>Unless otherwise stated, all PEM program training must be undertaken at advanced training level. PEM training time must include a minimum of:<\/p>\n<p>Paediatric tertiary emergency departments and large mixed departments must be specifically accredited for JTC PEM training. For up-to-date details and accreditation guidelines, please see the ACEM &amp; FRACP websites.<\/p>\n<h3>What rotations are recommended prior to applying for training<\/h3>\n<p>Broad exposure to multiple specialties is recommended especially paediatric subspecialties and critical care terms, ED etc.<\/p>\n<h3>How to improve your chances of selection<\/h3>\n<p>No specific courses or research required<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 months approved adult ED training *<\/li>\n<li>18 months of approved paediatric ED training<\/li>\n<li>12 months of approved paediatric medicine and<\/li>\n<li>6 months of approved paediatric ICU (this may be split as 3 months paediatric ICU and 3 months neonatal ICU).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>* Of the required 24 months adult ED training, up to 12 months may be undertaken during provisional training. A real bonus with working with children\u00a0is they stop moaning when you make them better (unlike some of our adult patients). Emergency in\u00a0general is a great specialty for those of us that love working in a team, who like the diversity of patient\u00a0presentations (no two days are alike) and like nutting out the clinical challenges that our patients present\u00a0us with. It is also great if you like to work hard then play hard as you walk out the door and your time is\u00a0your own. It allows a good work life balance with often runs of days off and the flexibility to be part time.\u00a0Public and private and international work is available.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-c4a3a687c6a03c51f fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_c4a3a687c6a03c51f\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"c4a3a687c6a03c51f\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#c4a3a687c6a03c51f\" href=\"#c4a3a687c6a03c51f\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">What particular abilities are important in this specialty?<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"c4a3a687c6a03c51f\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_c4a3a687c6a03c51f\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p>To work as a paediatric emergency doctor you must be a good communicator \u2013 all round &#8211; from<br \/>\ncommunicating with the 1 yo and their worried parent to your nursing and medical colleagues. You have<br \/>\nto work well in a team as PEM is not a solo sport and the simplest task in PED requires a lot of people to<br \/>\nbe involved.<\/p>\n<p>You have to be able to work well in a high pressure environment and multitask as children present in<br \/>\nwaves and you often have multiple balls in the air at once.<\/p>\n<p>You have to also work with, respect and focus on the family and gain a good rapport with them to achieve<br \/>\nthe best outcome for the child in front of you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-b5e0b31701ac6a0e4 fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\" href=\"#b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">When working as a specialist in this area, what does a daily schedule look like?<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_b5e0b31701ac6a0e4\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<ul>\n<li>Shift work \u2013 ED rosters are 24 hours, 7 days\/week<\/li>\n<li>ED Consultants may work night shifts in some EDs, or on-call overnight in others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-f3f70437d247ca3db fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_f3f70437d247ca3db\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"f3f70437d247ca3db\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#f3f70437d247ca3db\" href=\"#f3f70437d247ca3db\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">What advice would you give to someone thinking about this specialty? <\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"f3f70437d247ca3db\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_f3f70437d247ca3db\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p>Get exposure to a broad range of both adult ED, mixed ED including regional EDs and paediatric\u00a0subspecialty terms if you can in your junior years. Particularly useful terms are some of the surgical\u00a0subspecialties (even if done in an adult environment) and terms that give you exposure to procedures\u00a0which can be \u201cchallenging\u201d with a squirming paediatric patient.<\/p>\n<p>Probably start general first when you are testing the water either General ED or General Paediatrics\u00a0before you finally settle on Paediatric emergency as these extra general skills will make you more\u00a0employable in a non tertiary centre.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-a8f20e149cb95279a fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_a8f20e149cb95279a\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"a8f20e149cb95279a\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#a8f20e149cb95279a\" href=\"#a8f20e149cb95279a\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">How realistic is it to take time out of this specialty to travel, have children etc?<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"a8f20e149cb95279a\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_a8f20e149cb95279a\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p>ACEM and RACP allow some interruption to training for extended leave, travel &amp; parenting commitments.\u00a0ACEM is supportive of part time training (with ACEM this is a minimum of 0.5 time commitment with\u00a0RACP a minimum of 0.2). This can work well with partners\u00a0commitments and child care but can also take some getting used to.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly with young children at home it can be challenging to get the sleep needed for the shift work\u00a0and night duty \u2013 we have all been there (and are often still there) so we can help with strategies to deal\u00a0with this situation.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other specialties when you leave work someone else takes over and clinical work is rarely taken\u00a0home. This is a real positive compared to other specialties.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-c281552b22e9a148d fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_c281552b22e9a148d\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"c281552b22e9a148d\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\"
