The Spirometry training program provides clinicians with the skills, knowledge and specific competencies required to perform spirometry to international and national standards and guidelines. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:<\/p>\n
\n- explain the purpose of spirometry testing<\/li>\n
- identify the contraindications to spirometry testing<\/li>\n
- conduct spirometry testing with adults and children to international and national standards and guidelines<\/li>\n
- produce acceptable and repeatable results and recognise inaccurate test performances<\/li>\n
- interpret spirometry test results<\/li>\n
- implement quality assurance processes to ensure the accuracy of spirometry tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

This program is designed to support the development of knowledge and skills for the following health professionals with a basic understanding of respiratory physiology and pathophysiology:<\/p>\n
\n- nurses, doctors and allied health professionals<\/li>\n
- occupational health technicians<\/li>\n
- medical assistants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The program prepares participants to perform spirometry with adults or children, in tertiary healthcare facilities, community and rural health, general practice, occupational health services, outreach services, private practice specialist respiratory services, pathology services, and in research programs.<\/p>\n

- a portfolio assessment, completed in the workplace (minimum 5 hours).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Successful completion of all three (3) components is required to attain a Certificate of Completion.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Practical skills workshop<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nThe one-day practical skills workshop will enable clinicians to develop and demonstrate skills in conducting a spirometry test, interpreting results and ensuring quality control of spirometry equipment and processes. Completion of the online modules is a pre-requisite and supports the workshop learning.<\/p>\n
Spirometers will be supplied during face-to-face workshops; however, it is encouraged that all participants to bring a workplace spirometer with them to enhance the learning.<\/p>\n
For webinar workshops, attending from the workplace, and the availability of a workplace spirometer during the workshop, is highly desirable.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Workplace portfolio assessment<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nThe program includes the completion of a workplace portfolio assessment, which assists in the transfer and consolidation of skills developed in the workshop.\u00a0 The portfolio is completed in the workplace, with the support of workplace supervisors.<\/p>\n
The portfolio is comprised of 10 spirometry tests, including calibration verification reports. The completed portfolio must be submitted to the program co-ordinator within three (3) months of attending the workshop.<\/p>\n
Where requested, the workshop facilitators may provide some support and advice to assist with the timely completion of the portfolio assessment.<\/p>\n
A Certificate of Attendance of the workshop will be issued to all participants who complete the online modules and the workshop.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Currency of practice<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nQueensland Health is committed to high quality spirometry practice and requires currency of practice to be demonstrated regularly. It is recommended that refresher training is completed 12 months after initial training and then every three years thereafter.<\/p>\n
It is advised that all spirometry practitioners follow international standards, national guidelines and industry requirements for refresher training.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Spirometry Refresher Courses<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nRefresher training is available to participants who have previously completed a full spirometry training program and have demonstrated currency of practice.\u00a0 These courses are combined with the full program workshop and require completion of a pre-workshop portfolio. This assessment aims to check the effective transfer and maintenance of skills in the workplace after the initial training program completion. A portfolio assessment coversheet will be made available to participants on enrolment into the refresher course.<\/p>\n
It is recommended that a refresher course is completed 12 months after initial course completion, and every 3 years thereafter, to maintain skills and currency of practice. This is a legal requirement for certain occupational health screening programs. Please check legal requirements with your state authority.
