Dr Catherine Niven

Dr Catherine Niven is a product safety research fellow at the Australian Centre for Health Service Innovation at QUT and visiting researcher at JTI. She has an honours degree in law and international business and recently completed her doctoral study on public health approaches to child product safety. Catherine is currently working on an Australian Research Council funded discovery project addressing significant product safety knowledge gaps for older Australians.

Catherine is a member of the ACCC Product Safety Consultative Committee and multi-agency Consumer Product Injury Research Advisory Group and represents the Consumers Federation of Australia on Standards Australia technical committees including Child Safety in the Metaverse, Child Care Articles and Playground Equipment. She previously worked for the Queensland Government for a decade in principal legal and legislative roles.

She has a wealth of knowledge in international product safety regulation, injury surveillance methodologies and policy translation. Her research interests lie in improved identification of product safety risks to inform product safety design, standards, and regulatory responses.
