Professor Dylan Flaws

Professor Flaws’ interest lies in how people recover emotionally and socially after surviving a major illness or injury. He completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Psychology and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music at the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2006. Following this, he worked as a research assistant, where he developed his interest in medicine. While applying for medical school, he commenced a Master of Science (MSc) in Psychology at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, exploring how clinicians share decision-making with their patients. He received his medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Queensland in 2012, and his PhD in 2017, which explored how to predict outcomes when a patient presents to hospital with Chest Pain.
Professor Flaws commenced Psychiatry training in 2016, and soon developed an interest in how people recover after illness and injury after seeing this as an important unmet need in mental health. He completed his training in 2021 and began a Clinician Research Fellowship on recovery after critical illness while working as a consultant psychiatrist in the Mental Health Short Stay Unit in Caboolture Hospital. This work culminated in an international roundtable titled “Greater Recovery After Critical IllnEss (GRACE)” in collaboration with the Critical Care Research Group to establish a roadmap of critical illness recovery over the next ten years.
Professor Flaws commenced as Chair of Rehabilitation Services at the Jamieson Trauma Institute in 2025. He has published over 60 peer reviewed publications.
