Samantha Borg

Samantha Borg is a part-time Research Fellow with the Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI) and is in the final stages of completing her PhD with Queensland University of Technology and JTI. Her doctoral research examines patterns of opioid use following spinal cord injury in Queensland.

Samantha has a strong background in mixed-methods health services research, having commenced her research career with The University of Queensland in 2013. She also holds a part-time position with The Hopkins Centre at Griffith University, where she leads the Queensland component of the International Spinal Cord Injury (InSCI) Community Survey, a World Health Organization initiative aimed at strengthening internationally comparable data on the experiences of people living in the community with spinal cord injury.

Her PhD integrated quantitative and qualitative approaches to better understand opioid use following spinal cord injury. This includes experience in large linked administrative datasets and survey data, as well as qualitative interviews with people with lived experience of spinal cord injury and healthcare providers to explore the factors influencing opioid prescribing and use.

Samantha’s role with JTI is to support the Community Opioid Dispensing after Injury (CODI) project, led by Professor Cate Cameron. The project examines opioid dispensing patterns among people with traumatic injury using linked administrative data. The first phase analysed opioid dispensing among people injured in 2014–2015 and followed outcomes through to 2017. A second stage of data linkage is now underway to examine opioid dispensing following the implementation of opioid stewardship initiatives.
