HeIDI Research Framework

The Herston Infectious Diseases Institute (HeIDI) is supporting research within Metro North Health and our partner organisations under a defined Research Framework, which has been developed under the guidance of the HeIDI Research Advisory Committee. It outlines the pillars and capabilities in which the Institute aims to advance clinical care through the translation of research into clinical practice.

Our purpose is to deliver innovative infectious diseases research that achieves clinical excellence in the surveillance, diagnosis, management and prevention of serious infections that impact on our community.

Supporting Clinician Researchers

HeIDI aims to create a legacy by training the next generation of infectious diseases clinician researchers. To support the development of a skilled workforce, HeIDI provides Higher Degree by Research candidates (PhD, MPhil and Masters) with a focus in infectious diseases supervision and mentoring during their HDR journey. Flagship projects and programs

CSIRO IDR and AMR Mission-affiliated projects

The objectives of HeIDI around enhancing translation and clinical research, improving outcomes for patients with serious infections, and leading the prevention of healthcare associated infections throughout Queensland are strongly aligned with CSIRO’s health and biosecurity strategy, particularly in relation to the programs of work being planned by the CSIRO Infectious Disease Resilience (IDR) Mission, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Mission, and Australian e-Health Research Centre.

Given this alignment there is strong basis for CSIRO and HeIDI to actively cultivate increased collaboration and partnership. As a mechanism to establish this partnership, the CSIRO IDR Mission and AMR Mission have committed funding to support research in several identified priority areas. This research collaboration fund will foster links between CSIRO and other HeIDI members, as well as contributing to the outputs of the missions initiated by CSIRO.

Complex Urinary Tract Infection Multidisciplinary Team (CU-MDT) research program

The Complex Urinary Tract Infection Multidisciplinary Team (CU-MDT) is a new clinical service that has been established at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2021. HeIDI will play a supporting role in this clinical service and work with the multidisciplinary team to progress research to improve patient care and outcomes and describe the benefits to the health service.

Work is currently underway to develop a digital platform to support the multidisciplinary team in managing patients cared for by this service, and for future adaption across other infection-related services.

Device Related Infection Management theme

In partnership with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI), HeIDI is establishing a Device Related Infection Management research theme. The Theme Lead and support team will promote, lead and support multidisciplinary research (medical, nursing and allied health) within the RBWH and QUT, provide patient care and consultation to patients presenting or referred with device-related infections, and develop partnerships to advance the impact of work conducted at HeIDI, JTI and QUT.

The development of this theme is currently occurring, with recruitment underway for a Theme Lead.
