The 2026 Kenneth Jamieson Lecture welcomed Professor Gerry FitzGerald, one of Queensland’s most influential leaders in emergency medicine, trauma care, and health management, to reflect on the development of Queensland’s trauma system over the past two decades.

In his address, Professor FitzGerald shared insights from the state’s first trauma plan, highlighting how collaboration, research and system-wide thinking helped shape major trauma services, retrieval networks, clinical coordination, and trauma research across Queensland. He also explored future challenges and opportunities, including the role of technology, data, and innovation in improving patient outcomes.

The lecture celebrated the significant progress made in trauma care while recognising the ongoing importance of strong partnerships, evidence-based decision making and a coordinated approach to injury prevention and treatment.

The event also acknowledged the longstanding contribution of Neil Singleton, previous Insurance Commission for Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) whose support of trauma research and system development has helped advance trauma care throughout Queensland.
