The Jamieson Trauma Institute was delighted to welcome Dr Claude Martin Jr, Managing Director of the AO Alliance, on Thursday 17 September 2026.

In his presentation, “Mending Bones, Bridging Gaps,” Dr Martin shared insights from more than a decade leading the AO Alliance’s efforts to improve fracture and trauma care in low- and middle-income countries. Drawing on stories from across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, he highlighted the life-changing impact that timely, appropriate fracture care can have on patients, families and communities.

Dr Martin emphasised that sustainable improvement comes through local capacity building, including training surgeons, strengthening healthcare systems, developing clinical guidelines, supporting research, and fostering long-term partnerships. He showcased successful initiatives that have expanded the trauma workforce, improved infrastructure, reduced preventable complications, and strengthened regional training networks.

The central message of the presentation was that addressing trauma and injury care is not only a clinical challenge, but a global public health priority. Dr Martin called for greater collaboration between healthcare institutions, researchers, policymakers and donors to bridge gaps in care, improve patient outcomes, and ensure that people everywhere have access to timely and appropriate fracture treatment.
