STOP THE BLEED®: Using research to improve training
STOP THE BLEED® is a program to teach non-medical people how to stop life-threatening bleeding, including how to apply pressure, pack a wound, and apply a tourniquet. We want this training to be accessible to as many people as possible, so we developed an e-learning package and compared it with in-person training in an evaluation study. 93 people across Metro North Health and the community were trained for this study. We found that people who experienced e-learning were just as knowledgeable and confident about bleeding control techniques as those who experienced in-person training. However, in a simulation assessment, those who got digital training needed a little more guidance for how to physically pack wounds and apply tourniquets. Overall, bleeding control skills after training were high and we received valuable written feedback. We thank everyone who offered their time to participate in this study, and we are using their feedback and the results of this study to improve training materials, so that everyone can gain the skills and confidence to stop bleeding and save a life.
This research project was conducted in collaboration with the RBWH Trauma Service and funded by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission Innovative Research Action Awards (MIRAA).
