What to Expect

Your doctor has asked that you have a Home Arrhythmia Monitor (HAM) test before your next clinic appointment.  This will take about 30 minutes.

You will be given one of the two devices, which will be determined on the day.

If your symptoms or condition get worse, see your GP or go to your local emergency department.

If requested by your doctor, an outpatient appointment will be made, and you will receive an SMS or letter with your appointment date and time.

If you are being tested due to Palpitations

A Home Arrhythmia Monitor (HAM) is a device that records your heart rhythm, and the information is sent back to the hospital via a mobile device (AliveCor KardiaMobile ECG only). If you do not own a smart phone, please call (07) 5433 8060.

If you own a Smart Phone (i.e iPhone, Samsung, Android Phone), download the Kardia app from the App store before your appointment.

If you do not own a smart phone, you are not required to do this.

The device must be returned to the Cardiac Sciences Unit after 13 days (duration depending on your symptoms) from the day of application.

Note: Any recordings transmitted via a personally owned AliveCor KardiaMobile ECG device outside this period will not be monitored or actioned.

If you are being tested due to Dizziness / Fainting (e.g Syncope)

A Holter Monitor will record your heart activity for approximately 7 days whilst you go about your normal daily activities.

Disposable electrodes will be applied to your chest, which are connected to the monitor. The device fits into a pouch with a strap that can be worn over your shoulder or neck.

It is best to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to wear pants or a skirt.

It is important that the device does not get wet so you must remove the device before showering. You will be shown how to do this.

The device must be returned to the Cardiac Sciences Unit after 6 days (duration depending on your symptoms) from the day of application.
