What to Expect
Your doctor has asked that you have an Exercise Stress Echocardiogram. Please allow up to 2 hours.
An Exercise Stress Echocardiogram involves ultrasound images of the heart taken before and after you exercise. You will be required to walk on a treadmill which will increase in speed and incline at regular intervals until you get to your maximum effort. Your ECG and blood pressure will be taken throughout. If required there are showers you can use after your test if you wish.
Please call 5433 8060 prior to your test if you are unable to walk on a treadmill.
If your symptoms or condition get worse, see your GP or go to your local emergency department.
If requested by your doctor, an outpatient appointment will be made, and you will receive an SMS or letter with your appointment date and time.
How to prepare
Please wear appropriate clothing for exercise, comfortable shorts or skirt (not jeans or a dress). Ensure that you wear comfortable non-slip shoes, that you would wear for a quick walk (no thongs, loose fitting sandals or high heels), otherwise you may be asked to walk barefoot.
Please refrain from drinking caffeine, ie tea, coffee, energy drinks for 2 hours before your test. Try to eat a light meal 2 hours prior to your test and then do not eat after this time. Continue to drink water as needed. Take your medications as normal unless your Doctor specifically tells you not to.
During the test, it may be decided that a contrast agent is required. Contrast agents are used to improve image quality. If this is needed, a small needle will be placed in your hand or arm. The contrast solution will then be injected through this intravenous line. More information can be given at the time of the test if this is needed.
A Queensland Health consent form is included, please read this before you arrive. Write down any questions you may have and they will be answered on the day.
