Metro North Chief Executive Jackie Hanson joined leaders and staff from Redcliffe Hospital to thank volunteers for their work this year.

In 2024, Redcliffe Hospital’s 90-strong volunteer cohort contributed more than 15,000 hours in service to support patients and staff at the hospital in roles such as chaplaincy, companions, auxiliary and justice of the peace volunteers.

More than 50 of the group recently came together to socialise and enjoy lunch with all the festive trimmings.

Among them was Robert, a new retiree and resident of the Peninsula who started volunteering at the hospital in 2023.

“I was very active and social during my working life, with roles including being a teacher and a TAFE trainer,” he said.

“I knew I wanted to continue that social interaction in retirement.”

Robert serves as a Volunteer Companion, where he visits wards with books and magazines for patients.

“Truth be told, these are mostly conversation starters, the main part of the role is connecting with patients, who are often having a difficult time in hospital,” Robert said.

As a self-confessed people person, the role is a natural fit for Robert and one he’s relishing.

“I love meeting new people and connecting with them, in this role I get to meet people from all walks of life – it’s perfect for me,” he said.

“For patients who are in hospital for a while, I like that I become a familiar face and someone they can trust and build a relationship with.”

While enjoying Christmas lunch with 50 of his colleagues, Robert reflects on his first year as a Redcliffe Hospital volunteer.

“Volunteering at the hospital has been a great way to stay connected and make a difference in people’s lives, I’ve become part of a whole new community in retirement,” he said.

Thank you to Robert and all the volunteers across Metro North for the important role you play in our communities.
