Dr Danilo Carluccio

Senior Biomedical Engineer (Clinical & Research)
PhD, MEng, BEng(hons)
Danilo is a senior biomedical engineer (clinical and research) at HBI, where he manages the Facial Research Program. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering focused on additively manufactured bioresorbable bone scaffolds and is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at UQ. Prior to joining HBI, Danilo worked in industry at Materialise as a Clinical Engineer, designing patient-specific surgical guides and anatomical models for complex craniomaxillofacial procedures. In his current role, he combines research and clinical practice, contributing to numerous craniofacial reconstructive cases and driving the translation of advanced biofabrication technologies into patient care. His research spans bioresorbable polymers and metals, with first-in-human feasibility studies underway for paediatric craniofacial scaffolds. Danilo is also a named inventor on a patent for a novel magnetic retention system for craniofacial prostheses, reflecting his commitment to practical innovation. He has secured competitive research funding and demonstrated leadership in implementing new clinical workflows at the RBWH, significantly improving patient outcomes and reducing treatment times. Danilo has established international collaborations to improve access to prosthetic care through innovative 3D-printing solutions, particularly for rural communities. His contributions have been recognised through awards, invited presentations at national and international forums, and active involvement in outreach programs promoting equity and diversity in STEM. He is passionate about mentoring emerging researchers and fostering interdisciplinary partnerships to advance patient outcomes and translational impact.
