Liam is an Industrial Designer with a focus on transformative, human-centred design. He joined the Herston Biofabrication Institute in 2021 as an intern to advance his novel neurosurgical training model for external ventricular drain procedures. A second internship in 2022 saw him develop an intraoral scanning device concept for cleft-palate infants—work that contributed to him being named the Design Institute of Australia’s Queensland Graduate of the Year in 2023. Drawing on a decade of experience as an industrial electrician, Liam worked in the HBI lab as a Biomedical Technician during his final year of study before moving into his current design role.
Liam has since been deeply involved in research-driven product development at HBI, including the ongoing refinement of advanced vascular surgical models that support pre-surgical planning and surgical training across Queensland Health. Beyond his work at HBI, Liam serves as Co-Chair of the Design Institute of Australia’s Queensland Council, where he actively advocates for the value of design and the future of local manufacturing. He also helps foster the next generation of designers as a sessional academic in Industrial Design at the Queensland University of Technology.
