Acute Inpatient Service Mental Health

We care for people over the age of 18 who require inpatient care for the treatment of mental health issues. The service consists of 2 acute wards that have capacity for 47 people.

Our services

We care for people who require more support during their initial stay in the Psychiatric Intensive Care Units. Admission to the inpatient service is arranged following an assessment by a mental health clinician or doctor at Redcliffe or Caboolture Emergency Departments, Acute Care or Community Teams. Services include:

  • planning your care, treatment and recovery
  • supporting and assisting you to achieve daily goals and recognise your strengths
  • ongoing treatment after you leave hospital.

How to access this service

Admission to the inpatient service is arranged following an assessment by a mental health clinician and doctor.  Patients can be referred through 1300 MH CALL (1300 64 22 55).

What to bring

Each time you visit us
  • Your Medicare card
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Recovery goals and plan
  • Medications you are currently taking, including any that you have bought without a prescription and herbal medicine
  • Private health insurance card (if you want to use it)
  • Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame

Frequently asked questions

The average time that people spend in hospital is about 8 days but some people will stay less and others longer. Ask your doctor when you can expect to be discharged.

Smoking is not permitted in or within 5 metres of any Queensland Health hospital. You will have free nicotine replacement therapy available to you during your stay. People are not permitted to have cigarettes in the inpatient ward. If you bring cigarettes to the hospital they will be stored and returned to you on discharge if you ask for them.

During the early part of your stay you will be required to stay on the ward until your community access is discussed with your treating team.

Yes, family are welcome to visit the ward. Prior to the visit, please discuss this with your nurse so that a quiet room can be arranged. Visitors must be vetted and added to the authorised visitors list. This can be done after discussion with the unit social worker (07) 5316 5675.
