Getting your regular medications

You may be on regular medications for pre-existing conditions like asthma, high blood pressure or diabetes.

This is not limited to tablets, and may also include inhalers, skin creams / lotions and over-the-counter items such as vitamins.

Generally, the medications you were taking at home will be continued, and a doctor will prescribe these on a hospital medication chart.

Whilst we will ensure you are prescribed the most important medicines, we may stop some of your medications whilst you are in hospital – this could be because we are concerned they may affect your COVID-19 treatment, but there may be another medical reason.

We may also commence new medicines that you may need during your admission (e.g. paracetamol for pain, anti-nausea medicine for sickness). If you did not bring your medicines into hospital, please let your nurse know as we can arrange from them to be ordered and supplied by the hospital pharmacy.

Our pharmacy may not stock the specific brand you use at home but will have an alternative option which contains the same drug(s).

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your medications, please speak to your nurse who can speak to your doctor and/or the ward pharmacist.

If you are to continue any newly commenced medicines after discharge from hospital, we will ensure to let you know.
