Using your inhaler

You have been prescribed a budesonide inhaler as part of yourCOVID-19 treatment.

Budesonide is a drug commonly used in inhaler form in lung conditions such as asthma and emphysema (“smoker’s lung”) but has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of COVID-19.

COVID-19 can affect the lungs and cause breathing problems. These can be mild (e.g. needing a small amount of oxygen to help you breathe more comfortably) to major (e.g. requiring a machine or “ventilator” to help you breathe).

How does it work?

Steroids reduce inflammation in the body–a steroid inhaler, such as budesonide, provides targeted anti-inflammatory effects straight to the lungs.

Why have I been prescribed this inhaler?

Data from the UK has shown that using a budesonide inhaler as part of COVID treatment improves recovery time, as well as reducing the chance of complications e.g. needing oxygen. It has been particularly effective when used in early infection.

How do I use my inhaler?

You will need to use your inhaler twice a day.

You may not have used an inhaler before–we have made a short video with step-by-step instructions on how to use your inhaler correctly.

You should rinse your mouth after you have finished with your inhaler.
