Students from the University of Queensland

On 19 March 2026, the Herston Biofabrication Institute (HBI) welcomed undergraduate students from The University of Queensland (UQ) for an immersive learning experience designed to provide insight into the innovative work being carried out across the institute.

HBI is committed to supporting student learning by hosting students for course-related placements and educational visits, subject to project availability. Over the years, we have worked closely with UQ engineering and medicine students, providing valuable exposure to research, innovation, and real-world healthcare applications.

During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore not only the work of our biomedical engineers, but also the contributions of the many professionals from diverse disciplines who make up HBI. This multidisciplinary environment demonstrated how expertise from various fields comes together to advance research and develop solutions that improve patient care. The students engaged with researchers and staff throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions and gaining a deeper understanding of the projects, technologies, and collaborative approaches that drive innovation at HBI.

They were able to see firsthand how medicine, science, engineering, and innovation work together to address complex healthcare challenges and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the breadth of work undertaken at HBI while inspiring future researchers, clinicians, and innovators. We were delighted to share our knowledge and experiences with the students and look forward to continuing to support the development of the next generation of healthcare and research professionals.
