We support adults and children with diabetes and women with gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
Our services
We offer a range of educational services for people staying at Redcliffe Hospital including:
- diabetes education to children and adults with type 1 diabetes
- introduction of insulin for type 2 diabetes
- diabetes educator and dietician support to the antenatal clinic.
Our team consists of doctors, nurses, dietitians, educators, social workers, exercise physiologists and psychologists.
How to access this service
GP or medical practitioner referral
To access a Metro North Hospital and Health Service Specialist Outpatient Clinic, your GP or Medical Practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the Central Referral Unit.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.
Inpatient referral
No external referrals are accepted for the Redcliffe Hospital Inpatient Diabetes Service. You can only access this service when you are staying in hospital or if you have been referred by a hospital clinician.

After discharge, patients can be seen at one of our Specialist Diabetes Outpatient Clinics closest to their home:
- North Lakes Health Precinct (paediatric diabetes and adult diabetes)
- Caboolture Community Health Centre (paediatric diabetes and adult diabetes)
- Chermside Community Health Centre (adult diabetes)
What to bring
- Your Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you have one)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait
