Patients in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) on Christmas Day this year can look forward to comforting Christmas classics on their meal trays.

RBWH Cook Scott Tyson is one of the food services team members who has spent many weeks getting ready for the big day and explains what’s in store.

“We know that patients would much rather be at home with family on Christmas Day and not in the hospital,” Scott said.

“We hope that adding some traditional foods to our Christmas Day menu will bring a little joy to those who are spending this Christmas with us at RBWH.”

While it might sound simple, making changes to the menu of an almost 1000-bed hospital is no small task.

“Feeding a hospital the size of RBWH every day is all about planning, and any change needs to be considered well in advance of being made,” Scott said.

“We started making plans for Christmas Day back in September and are now in the final stages of getting ready for the big day.”

Patients at RBWH have a range of dietary and nutritional requirements to help with their recovery journey, which Scott and team considered as part of their planning.

“For every meal we serve at RBWH, we cater for a range of different needs and preferences. I’m pleased to say we have been able to work some Christmas surprises into all the different types of meals we prepare.”

This year’s Christmas menu will start with the option of pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, followed by turkey, ham, stuffing, roast potatoes and all the trimmings to bring some festive magic to patients as they enjoy Christmas lunch.
