When nurse Dale Caust isn’t working to make a meaningful difference for patients at TPCH Mental Health, he is involved in the sport of powerlifting.

“Lifting has been a passion of mine for several years now. I find immense satisfaction in pushing myself physically and seeing the progress I make over time,” Dale said.

“I have competed in lifting competitions before and that adds an extra layer of excitement and motivation, as it allows me to challenge myself against others and celebrate achievements in a supportive community.”

Dale’s role as a Metro North Peer Responder also gives his colleagues a ‘lift’. The Metro North Peer Responder Program is a program designed to support staff wellbeing and promote help seeking behaviours.

“For me, being a Peer Responder means being there for my colleagues in their times of need, offering them active listening, genuine empathy, and validation for their experiences,” Dale said.

“Knowing that I can provide a safe and confidential space where they can freely express themselves brings me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

“Maintaining confidentiality is paramount to me, as it ensures that my colleagues feel safe and respected when confiding in me.”

Dale has worked in the mental health directorate for five years and enjoys the diversity and complexity the role provides.

“Mental health is a field where no two days are the same, and each person I encounter brings their own unique experiences and perspectives. This keeps me engaged and constantly learning, whether it’s staying updated on the latest research and best practices or honing my skills in communication and empathy,” Dale said.

“Every day I have the chance to support individuals who are going through challenging times, whether it’s helping them navigate their recovery journey, providing a listening ear during moments of distress, or advocating for their needs within the healthcare system.”

For Dale the sense of community and camaraderie among mental health professionals is also truly special.

“I’m grateful to be part of a team that is dedicated, compassionate, and supportive,” Dale said.

“I find inspiration in collaborating with colleagues who share a common goal of promoting mental wellbeing and recovery. On tough days the banter within our team provides a great lift. It’s amazing how a bit of laughter can make even the most challenging tasks feel more manageable.

“Knowing that we can rely on our teammates not only for professional collaboration but also for a good laugh or a shoulder to lean on makes all the difference. The team’s banter serves as a reminder that we’re all in this together. It helps us maintain perspective, stay resilient, and keep pushing forward, no matter what challenges come our way.”

When not powerlifting, Dale also enjoys gaming and spending quality time with friends and family. He is also expecting the imminent arrival of his baby boy!
