The initiative – which started as a pilot program in February 2020 – enables families who have been identified as showing signs of vulnerability to access maternity services in the same location as child health services.

Since October 2021, the program has formed part of the existing Caboolture Hospital and Brisbane North Primary Health Network (PHN) model, ensuring continuity of care for soon-to-be and new Mums.

Starting Well has demonstrated success in increased healthcare attendance rates both during pregnancy and upon the birth of the child, as well as increase in birth weight of babies and increased gestation periods.

Caboolture Hospital Acting Nursing and Midwifery Director Marcia Morris said the program was a collaborate effort between Caboolture Hospital and the Brisbane North PHN to provide increased support for local women during what can be a challenging time of their lives, both during pregnancy and upon the birth of a child.

“We know that providing that consistent healthcare offering where we can build rapport allows for a supportive environment for patients that need it most, and the results speak for themselves,” Marcia said.

First-time Mum Ashlee Corlett found details of the Starting Well program on the Caboolture Hospital website.

“As a 23-year-old and first time Mum, I had never heard of the program before… it’s very similar to the Midwifery Group Practice except you have the one midwife for your whole health journey,” Ashlee said.

“You also visit the same midwife post-partum and this was in addition to the hospital care provided.

“I felt so supported by my midwife and I’m astounded by the genuine care and advocacy she had for me, including linking me in with lots of services I had never heard of.

“I felt safe and like I wouldn’t be pushed aside, especially as it was my first pregnancy, I really could talk to her about anything.”

Brisbane North PHN CEO Libby Dunstan said the program was a wonderful practical example of the ongoing commitment that Caboolture Hospital and the PHN have to ensure children in the region are born healthy and raised strong in their families.

“We know that quality ante and post-natal care for mothers can set young children and families on a positive trajectory towards lifelong wellbeing,” Libby said.
