Deadly Smiles is a health initiative designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families by promoting strong oral health and overall wellbeing. We take a family-centred approach, making oral health care accessible, culturally safe, and connected to community.
What we do
The team of multidisciplinary dental health professionals works together to provide:
- Oral health education and screenings at community events.
- Regular engagement, education and screenings with Koobara Kindy and Kurbingui Youth Development Service.
- Provide information about the link between oral health and general health to improve quality of life.
Services we offer
During community visits and engagement activities, Deadly Smiles provides:
- Limited oral health examinations.
- Fluoride applications.
- Education on:
- Toothbrushing techniques.
- Healthy diet and nutrition.
- Smoking cessation resources.
The team also offer referrals for further care, including dentures and other treatments, based on individual needs.

Oral health is deeply connected to overall health. By looking after our teeth and gums, we help prevent illness and improve wellbeing for the whole family.
Community partnerships
Deadly Smiles works closely with the Metro North Better Together Health Van and local organisations to build strong relationships and deliver care where it’s needed most. These partnerships ensure community has access to safe, high-quality, evidence-based oral health care.
Eligibility
At Deadly Smiles community engagement events eligible children and adults can access the screening program.
Children eligibility
✓ Is eligible through Medicare and aged between 4 years to the end of Grade 10, or
✓ Is eligible through Medicare and the child dental benefits schedule (CDBS) (0yrs–18yrs), or
✓ Is eligible through Medicare and is listed on a valid Centrelink Concession Card (All ages).
Adult eligibility
For adults to be eligible for free public oral health services they must:
✓ Be Queensland residents; and,
✓ Be eligible for Medicare; and,
✓ Be receiving benefits from one of the following concession cards:
- Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs;
- Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink;
- Health Care Card;
- Commonwealth Seniors Health Card; or
- Queensland Seniors Card.
