What is the Sistas Shawl Project?
The Sistas Shawl Project responds to the cultural barrier of feeling shame or embarrassed during screening, by providing women with a beautiful cultural shawl for modesty and to wear during their breast screen. It also creates a welcoming and culturally safe BreastScreen Service with the use of murals in the breast screening rooms and staff polo shirts. The Sistas Shawl, staff polos and murals all feature ‘A Woman’s Dreaming’ artwork by artist Sharon McAvoy.
Who can get a Sista Shawl?
Clients that identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander can receive a free Sistas Shawl when they screen at Brisbane Northside services.
Northside locations include Chermside, Brisbane City, Indooroopilly, Keperra, Redcliffe and North Lakes.
Sunshine coast locations include Caboolture, Kilcoy and Bribie Island.
How do I make an appointment at BreastScreen Queensland?
Making an appointment for a breast screen is easy! You don’t need a letter from your doctor, just call 13 20 50 or make an appointment at www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au.
Alternatively, you can make contact with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and they can help with booking your appointment.
How do I organise a Group Booking at BreastScreen Queensland?
BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside and BreastScreen Sunshine Coast, are able to work with ATSICHS and MATSICHS services in Brisbane Northside to organise a group booking. For more information on group bookings, please visit https://www.moretonatsichs.org.au/services/breast-cancer-screening.
