Emergency and Trauma Centre

Overview

The RBWH Emergency and Trauma Centre, within the Critical Care and Clinical Support Services Service Line, is one of the busiest emergency facilities in Australia.  It is a level one trauma and referral centre, accepting patients from all over Queensland, Northern New South Wales and parts of the Pacific.

The Centre has a co-located emergency psychiatric service, co-located radiology service, in-house drug and alcohol detoxification service, social work service, physiotherapy service, extended hours emergency pharmacy service, and embedded security service.

The Centre’s model of care is based around a multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing and allied health staff with a focus on patient care, clinical standards and departmental flow.

The Centre provides care to over 78,000 patients per year with a high acuity and an admission rate of approximately 33%.

Research

The RBWH Emergency and Trauma Centre is a unique research environment in which our clinicians and students engage in a broad spectrum of medical and health services research within the themes of critical care, cardiac, trauma and people & practices. Our collaborative approach sees us working with clinical staff and academic researchers throughout RBWH, the Queensland Ambulance Service, and many other Australian and international hospitals, universities and research organisations.

Our research activities range from small student projects to single-/multi-site sponsored, or investigator initiated, clinical trials and translational research projects.  Research is supported by a Director of Emergency Research, Associate Professor Kevin Chu, an Emergency Medicine Research Manager and Emergency Nursing Senior Research Fellow together with project-based research staff.
