General Surgery

Overview

The Department of General Surgery consists of four sub speciality units and the Acute Service Unit (ASU). The sub speciality units are breast and endocrine surgery, colorectal surgery, hepato-biliary surgery and upper gastro intestinal surgery.

There are two general surgery wards at the RBWH specialising in Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Surgery. Both wards have a medical component of Gastro and Liver patients. Consultant Medical Staff include Staff Specialists, Visiting Surgeons, Fellows and Training Registrars. The Department provides inpatient and outpatient services for both elective and emergency patients.

The Department promotes a high multi-disciplinary focus and liaises closely with a dedicated team of physios, OT’s, Social Workers, Dieticians, Pharmacists, Speech Therapist, APMS, Case Co-ordinator, Case Managers and Discharge Co-Coordinators.

Research teams

Surgical and Perioperative Services is made up of twelve speciality departments and the operating rooms service at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. The Service Line provides a wide range of surgical services to the Metro North Hospital and Health Service and is a major tertiary referral centre for Queensland. The importance of clinical research is reflected by significant research activities in the departments.
