Status Review of the implementation of the recommendations made in the “External Benchmarking Exercise: The Prince Charles Hospital Heart and Lung Transplant Services” Report

MEDIA STATEMENT

An independent Status Review has confirmed significant progress in strengthening heart and lung transplant services at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH).

Led by experienced health administrator Bernadette McDonald, the review confirms Metro North Health has made significant progress implementing the 43 recommendations from an external benchmarking exercise commissioned in July 2024 to strengthen TPCH’s transplant services.

It found that 34 recommendations have been completed, including senior clinician recruitment, additional resourcing, adoption of organ preservation technology, and improvements to infection control, with the remaining nine well advanced.

The review identified 13 opportunities to embed reforms into day-to-day operations across the service and support long-term improvement.
