Full list of services

School Dental Service provide both general and emergency dental care.

A dental check-up is an opportunity for children and young people to ask any questions to improve their oral health and address concerns with their smile.  A comprehensive examination will ensure that a plan is specifically tailored to each person’s individual needs.  Your dental practitioner will discuss how to keep your teeth healthy and give dietary and oral hygiene advice relevant to you.

Parents/legal guardians must attend the initial dental appointment so they can be involved in making decisions about their child’s oral health care and discuss any issues that may be of concern.  A responsible adult is required to attend at any other follow-up appointments.  This will be explained by oral health staff at the check-up appointment.

Please bring your current Medicare Card to your child’s dental appointment.  Your child must be listed on this card.

Dental check-up services include:

  • Assessment of teeth and gums and other dental concerns
  • Dental x-rays when required
  • Analysing and recognising risk factors for dental diseases
  • Providing oral health instructions and dietary advice
  • Delivering preventive and therapeutic interventions
  • Dental scale and clean
  • Fissure sealants
  • Application of fluoride varnish
  • Restorations (fillings)
  • Simple extractions of teeth under local anaesthetic
  • Emergency pain management

If your child needs emergency or urgent care, call your closest dental clinic or contact centre for an appointment.

Specialist services such as orthodontics (braces) are a specialist service. There may be restricted eligibility for specialist services, for example, available to concession-card holders only. For more information on the eligibility for specialist services, refer to the Oral Health Services Eligibility Guideline.
